Before I knew this was my calling. . .
At a young age, I had decided that I would never be a baker. As a young girl I took part in a baking contest with my brother and sister: The cake I made was terrible, I just threw it out.

From that day more than 25  years ago, I journeyed to: “I’m passionately in love with wedding cakes. At night I dream about the cakes I’m going to make.”

How it started. .
Somewhere early on in that period, when I was still in high school at East Lyme, I came to my epiphany. I knew I wanted to decorate cakes—even though I’d never done it yet. I was artistic, and the cakes I’d seen were so awesome. I thought decorating cakes was a practical way of using my artistic abilities to make money. It took a long time, but I never let my goal slip from my sight. As a senior I signed up for a job-experience program and became a full-time cake decorator at the village bake house in Niantic. But a year out of high school I got married and had children. My baking career was sidetracked—temporarily.

Becoming "The Cake Lady"

I continued working off and on at the bakery. Eventually, I began baking my own cakes at home, for friends and family. My early efforts at baking were not promising, but with practice I got the knack. I lleft the village Bank House, put a kitchen in my basement and incorporated in 2003 as, The Cake Lady.

Business was, well slow. Then came my chance, I was persuaded to take part in the Q-105 Bridal show at the Groton Motor inn, in January 2004. I printed up flyers and business cards, but mostly I baked like mad, sheet cakes, birthday cakes, wedding cakes in the shape of a fountain, an upside down umbrella, a golf course. People were "Wowed" The people bottlenecked at the cake display. Since then, business has been, well, rising fast.

I now have a photo album depicting cakes for all occasions—dinosaurs, shrek, snoopy, and cabbage patch kid, a sugar house with curtains made of sugar.

The Cake Lady is a small family oriented business specializing in custom delicious fresh baked cakes. We book up fast, so we require at least 5 days notice for special occasion cakes. We always have gourmet cupcakes available daily.
